Blood Donor Information

To be an eligible blood donor - 

You must be 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds and be in general good health the day you wish to donate.

A donor can give blood every 56 days. 

Thank you for helping save lives here in your community.  One hour of your time can save up to three lives.

COLDS
24 hours after recovery.

CREUTZFELDT-JAKOB DISEASE
If you or any blood relative has ever been told that your family is at an increased risk for Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, or if you ever had a dura mater (or brain covering) transplant during head or brain injury, you are indefinitely deferred.

DENTAL WORK
Tooth extraction or oral surgery is deferred for 72 hours.

DIABETES
May donate if blood sugar is with diet, oral mediaction, or most insulin.

EAR & BODY PIERCING
12 month waiting period if non-sterile needles used.

ELECTROLYSIS
12 month waiting period if non-sterile needles used.

HEART DISEASE
History of serious disease of the heart or blood vessels, such as Aortic Stenosis or Mitral Stenosis are deferred.

HEPATITIS
Permanently deferred, unless before age 11.

HIV/AIDS
Individuals at increased risk of exposure to HIV, the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) are deferred.

MONO
Donor is acceptable if well recovered from symptom of mononucleosis.

PREGNANCY
Not eligible while pregnant; eligible six weeks after delivery or third trimester fetal loss.

SORE THROAT
24 hours after recovery.

SURGERY
Usually acceptable after donor returns to work and normal activities.  If you received a blood transfusion then you must wait 12 months before donating.

TATTOOS
There is a 12 month waiting period for tattoos done in Michigan because the State of Michigan does not regulate tattoo facilities. 

X-RAYS
With dyes-may donate after 48 hours.
