American Red Cross Volunteers helping in action:

The Red Cross recovery operation to help thousands of people affected by last week's tornadoes and ongoing flooding is huge, covering a wide geography across several states.  Early estimates show more than 13,000 homes across six states were destroyed or damaged by these devastating tornadoes.

The Red Cross Safe and Well secure Website is a way to let your loved ones know you are safet and to find information about people in the affected areas.  To register, visit www.redcross.org and Click on the "List Yourself or Search Registrants" link under "How to Get Help".

Since March 31, the Red Cross has opened more than 130 shelters in 16 states providing more thatn 10,000 overnight stayst to people in need.  More than 4,500 Red Cross workers from all 50 U.S. states have assisted with recovery efforts in 16 affected states on 20 separate relief operations. Since March 31, 2011 more than 253,000 relief items like hygiene kits, mops, brooms, tarps, shovels, work gloves, and coolers have been handed out in affected neighborhoods and more than 560,00 meals and snacks have been provided thanks to our wonderful partners like the Salvation Army and Southern Baptist Convntion.

The Red Cross depends on financial dontaions in times of disaster.  Please consider making a donation today to help the thousands of people who have been affected by these disasters.  You can do so by the following:

  • Visit www.redcross.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS or text the world REDCROSS to 9099 to make a $10.00 donation.
  • Contribution may also be sent to your local American Red Cross chapter or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washigton, DC 20013
  • Any donation, large or small will help.  For example $3.00 can provide a comfort it for someone in a a disaster.  $6.00 can cover the cost of a blanket, $10.00 the cost of a hot meal. For $150.00, someone's donation can cover the cost of providing food and shelter to a family of four for a day they spend in a shelter.

If you're a student or recent graduate interested in volunteering for the American Red Cross, the South Central Michigan Chapter has internships available in marketing, Health & Safety, Emergency Services and Administrative Assistance.

All internships are unpaid positions and you must be willing to spend 21 hours a week for at least 12 weeks.
